Panos Valavanis was born in 1954 and studied Classical Archaeology at the University of Athens and at Würzburg in Germany. Since 1980 he has held a position at Athens University, and since 2005 he has been Professor in the Department of History and Archaeology. His twelve books and most of his papers are concerned with ancient Greek pottery and iconography, the archaeology and topography of Athens, classical athletics and the Panhellenic sanctuaries, and ancient Greek technology. He has taken part in many Greek and international conferences and has lectured at universities and museums in Europe, the United States and the Far East. He is the author of many archaeological guides and books for the general public, especially books about archaeology for schoolchildren, most of which have been translated into other languages.
